Episode 52: Rhinebeck Recap!

Episode 52: Rhinebeck Recap!Bootie and Bossy
00:00 / 32:24

What we discussed:

What is it about Rhinebeck?! It's hard to believe that a modest gathering of local shepherds and 4-H Clubs to trade fleece and auction small livestock in 1980 is now a booming event attracting 30,000 people from all over the world. We met so many fascinating fiber folks, including Ting who owns a knitting store in Taiwan and three different knitting groups from Kansas City, in addition to seeing some of our favorite knitting celebs like Adele and Jimmy of Lolabean Yarn, designers Caitlin Hunter, Safiyyah Talley and Zanete, knitting gurus Patty Lyons and Carson Demers, and Gigi in all of her orange glory. We also reconnected with our friend Christina Kading and enjoyed watching her dad demonstrate how to shear a sheep. There's just a great sense of community that magically happens when a bunch of people sporting their handknit sweaters (Andrea Mowry's Ooey Gooey was well represented!) gather on a beautiful fall day on the Dutchess County Fair Grounds. Perhaps Alice Seeger, founder of Belfast Fiber Arts, said it best:

"You can make a lot of things when you spin, dye, weave, knit, or crochet . . . But the most important things are the friendships.”

Quoted in Laura Bannister's article, "Counting Sheep in Rhinebeck, New York," Vogue, October 24, 2022.

The fabulous people, places and things we saw:

Christina Kading: we interviewed her in Episode 36. She's still fabulous and still selling amazing art and rugs.

Gigi: the iconic orange lady! Spreading positivity and joy wherever she goes.

Lolabean yarns: we loved her show colorway, "Get in Good Trouble" based on John Lewis. In her words, "A Palette of Resistance: What you see here is what I believe Good Trouble looks like in yarn form. It's gritty elegance. Protest in motion. Sacred rebellion."--Adella Colvin

Carson Demers: his book, Knitting Comfortably is a game changer.

Patty Lyons: her book Knitting Bag of Tricks is a must have for your knitting library.

Safiyyah Talley: another clever lady who has a book about knitting a pair of socks in one long tube, and a new one for cowls.

Tingknitting who very cleverly managed to steek her Ooey Gooey and keep the welts. She has a yarn shop in Taiwan.

Woolworks, Ltd: this sweet shop in Putnam, CT has a wonderful community of crafters.

The Yarn Farm: charcuterie, wine, beer, AND yarn? Yes, please!

River and Post: the best short ribs ever, along with the best bartender ever!

About the Recipe:

Waiting in line for food really is the best way to talk with people, and when we have a Bootie and Bossy meet-up next year at Rhinebeck, it will definitely be near the Brussels Sprouts food truck--just a heads up there for you. The Brussels Sprouts line is almost as long as the one for ice cream, proving once again that these are our people.

Be sure to try our Rhinebeck recipe recreation, and we can't wait to see you there next year!

Whatever you do, don't knit like my sister!!

We have a game, thanks to our brilliant children who made it for us! Note that (for now) it is only playable on a desktop computer. Maybe you need a distraction for certain people so that you can get more knitting time? Or maybe you want to play a superfun knitting game? Either way, enjoy!!
